If you are born in March, we say we envy you!
The month holds the honor of having one of the prettiest looking gemstones as its birthstone. The oceanic colors immediately transport the senses to the beautiful landscape of far and wide water, stretching ends to meet the sky. If we may call the birthstone the apt amalgamation of nature’s most spectacular beauty coming together, it won’t be an exaggeration.
Aquamarine derives its name from the Latin phrase meaning seawater, justifying its glossy luster and water-like transparency. Like the deep green emeralds, pinkish morganite, and the citric-yellow heliodor, aquamarine is also composed of the mineral beryl. What lends it the most magnificent blue-green color one might have ever seen is the varying iron traces in the beryl crystals. Interestingly, up until the 19th century, saturated green aquamarine was highly valued. But now, the more intense and uniform the blue is, the higher is the worth of the stone.
